Hurricane season & your vehicle
June through November, with a September peak. In a city built around nearly 400 miles of canals, most of what protects a car here is decided in May, not during a watch.
Before the season
What to do in May, while it is boring
- Confirm you carry comprehensive coverage — it is the part that responds to flood, surge and falling debris.
- Photograph the vehicle inside and out and store the images off your phone. Post-storm claims move faster with a dated baseline.
- Keep the title, registration and insurance card scanned to cloud storage, not just in the glovebox.
- Know your evacuation zone — Lee County publishes an address lookup, and it matters a lot if you're on a canal or near Burnt Store or Matlacha.
- Identify a parking garage or inland friend's driveway now; during a watch, every garage fills within hours.
- Keep the tank above half from August onward. Stations run dry along evacuation routes long before the storm arrives.
Surge vs wind
What actually destroys cars here
Newcomers picture wind. In a canal city like Cape Coral, the loss is usually water. Storm surge pushed several feet of saltwater into ground-floor garages along canal-front streets across Cape Coral, Fort Myers Beach and Matlacha/Pine Island during Ian, and a car that sits in saltwater is generally a total loss even if it starts afterward — the corrosion works through wiring harnesses and control modules for months.
That changes the priority order. Elevation beats shelter. An upper deck of an open garage a mile inland is better than a closed garage at sea level. If your driveway backs up to one of Cape Coral's canals or you're near Burnt Store, Yacht Club or Cape Harbour, treat surge as the planning case.
Never drive through standing water, and never start a car that has been submerged — turning the key is what converts a possible repair into a certain one.

Why shipping a car out during a watch rarely works
- Carriers reroute away from the peninsula as soon as a cone includes Florida; outbound trucks vanish within a day or two.
- Loads that are already booked get delayed, not prioritized — drivers will not sit in an evacuation corridor.
- Rates spike in the days after landfall because inbound capacity collapses and salvage moves compete for space.
- If you know your car should summer elsewhere, book the move in May or early June. That is a planned relocation, not an evacuation.
- After a storm, expect delayed pickups for a week or more while roads, gates and bridges reopen. We will tell you honestly rather than take a deposit on a date we cannot hold.
